You could help your elderly neighbour by painting their fences, ask someone if they need a lift at the bus stop, or buy a homeless person some food. There is a pure joy to giving your time to someone else and making their life better. If you’re happy to spend a little bit, then you could buy someone a small gift and if you get it from a charity shop then your good deed is doubled. Meeting the love of your life is the greatest free gift that any of us can receive, so it would make sense that if you haven’t found your other half, that you would want to add it to your bucket list.

3. Donate Blood

We all know that blood donation is important, with slogans such as ‘give blood and save lives.’ Donated blood is essential for many reasons but more specifically by women who have complications during pregnancy, children with severe anaemia, accident victims and cancer patients.

We have given blood a few times and can remember our first donation very clearly. We felt extreme anxiety, so we totally understand why people are scared to do it. The reality is it’s far easier than you will realise, and at the end you are given a drink and normally biscuits for the sugar, so it’s a win win. Make sure you drink plenty the day before your donation and on that morning, it helps with finding a vein. You will have a small finger prick test to check for iron levels and then if that’s ok, you’re ready to give blood. The needle in the arm is a small pinch and then you get to lie down and close your eyes and relax, sounds heavenly doesn’t it. You’ll leave the donation centre feeling euphoric as you know what your blood will mean to someone. Most countries have donation websites, simply Google ‘how can I donate blood’ and it should pop up.

4. Knit a Scarf

If you’re looking for a new hobby, then knitting is ideal because it is incredibly relaxing and cheap to begin. What was seen as an activity for the elderly, has now become a trendy option for the youngsters out there. Getting started is simple, you just need the wool and knitting needles, which you can purchase from a hobby shop or ask within your immediate circle if anyone has a spare set.

To actually get started you could see if any of your family and friends know how to knit, so that they can show you. But you could also look online for guidance via YouTube videos or blogs. Soon you’ll know the difference between a cable stitch, a garter stitch, and a rib stitch. We would recommend beginning with a scarf because it is the easiest, but then you can always move onto something a little harder. If you want to make it a little more social, then you can always join a local knitting group and make friends with the same interests.

For our list of hobbies, check out our hobbies bucket list which pretty much covers every type you can imagine.

It is renowned for reducing stress, anxiety, depression, pain, lower blood pressure and improve sleep. We spend 10 minutes every day meditating, and have found it has significantly helped how we react to the stresses in our life. If you want to spend any money then you can go to meditation classes, but the easiest thing to do is listen to guided meditation on YouTube or services such as Spotify. Starting with guided is probably better because it helps to focus on someone’s voice. If you skipped the part where your friends gave you a nick name, but you’ve always wanted one then why not create it yourself. There’s no rule to say you cannot choose what nickname you want. Most tend to be associated with your first or surname, most of us know a Jonesy or two. Of course, that doesn’t mean your friends will agree to call you it, but you can always try.

8. Watch a Sunrise and Sunset in One Day

Watch a Sunrise and Sunset in One DayThere’s something life affirming about watching a day begin and end, because you realise how short life is. For many the opportunity arises when they travel, but you can watch a sunrise and sunset at home. Find a comfortable spot in the garden or by your window and focus on that present moment and how precious everything is. The best part of this summer bucket list item is that it is completely free, but it will fill your soul and hopefully change your perspectives on life’s stresses.

9. Take a New Route to Work

If life seems a little stale, then make sure you mix it up. An easy one is finding a new route to work, which can open your eyes to the world around you. When we follow the same journey everyday it can become monotonous and we tend to drown out our surroundings, but we’re really missing out. So, shake up your routine and find a new way to walk, cycle or drive to your job, especially if it’s along a beach, river, or forest, that would really brighten our mornings.

10. Start a Blog

As you can imagine this is one, we’d definitely recommend, as it has brought so much joy to our lives. Most of us are knowledgeable or passionate about something, so why not share that with the world and start up your own blog or website. Simple tools such as WordPress.com make it easy for novices to set up a site and there are very little costs associated with it. The most important element is the domain name or site name you pick, as it should help people understand what it is you’re writing about or sharing. Popular blogs tend to be focused on travel, food, fitness, motherhood, finance, and celebrity gossip. But it’s the niche areas which tend to do better, whether it’s a love of sprouting, juggling or even ice baths, there’s someone out there who will love to read about your experiences and tips.

11. Sing Karaoke in Front of a Crowd

Sing Karaoke in Front of a CrowdThis one absolutely filled us with dread, but we have done it and, in the end, we really enjoyed it; yes, we were rubbish. Lots of pubs and clubs have karaoke nights, so just work on building up that courage, have a couple of stiff drinks to numb the nerves and give it a try. Why not practice your favourite song at home beforehand and learn the words, so when you’re up in front of everyone, it will feel more natural.

12. Go Vegetarian or Vegan

With the rising popularity of vegetarianism and veganism, this may be something you have considered. With so many new products out there such as Beyond Burgers, it’s so easy to make the transition. Our advice is to start by adapting one meal a day, so for example if you have cereal and you want to make it vegan, then buy a plant-based milk. Small changes to your habits will make it stick, and you may even find your shopping bill will go down. We saw a dramatic drop in our food costs the more we moved to a plant-based diet.

13. Write a Letter to Someone Special Who Has Positively Influenced you

Most people see the written letter as a thing of the past and yet it’s a beautiful gift to someone who you love and cherish. That person could be a family member, friend or someone who has inspired and influenced you. The most important thing is you take some quiet time and sit to write down your feelings about them. You will probably find it will be quite cathartic, as you express your gratitude to that special someone. It doesn’t have to be lengthy and what it says will completely depend on what you want to say. The real gift is the vulnerability you have shown by telling that person how important they are in your life. This is a cheap bucket list item in terms of the material and financial element, but what you will receive from it in terms of joy, can only enrich your life.

14. Start a Gratitude Journal

Another easy and low cost bucket list item which will help focus your mental health and wellbeing, is starting a gratitude journal. Scientific studies have found that people who focus on gratitude’s appear to have improved immune systems and lower blood pressure, plus it can help with your quality of sleep.

To get started you simply need a pad and pen, which most of us will have lying around the house. We bought one for a couple of pounds which we use as both a gratitude book and journal. When we began, we started with 5 gratitude’s every day, but that was a little too much, so we reduced it to 3. How many you choose is completely down to you, but the key is that you sit, relax, and really focus on what makes you smile.

Every day what you’re grateful for will be different, but you may on occasion repeat them. It’s a personal thing and will totally depend on how you feel that day and the things happening in your life. We have written down a huge variety of gratitude’s, a beautiful meal, our friends, family, a cup of coffee, watching the sunset, technology, or health. It gives you the time to focus on the now, remember how beautiful life is and that there is always something to be grateful for.

15. Complete a 1,000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

Low Cost Jigsaw PuzzleWe’ve said 1,000 piece and not one of those huge 10,000-piece puzzles, because it’s best to start with an easier one. There are 500-piece puzzles if the 1,000 seems a little bit too much. We are huge jigsaw fans and started them only recently because they were on our bucket list and as a way to reduce our screen time. We didn’t quite realise how addictive we would find them, so we prewarn you, you may fall in love with doing jigsaws.

Because this is a low-cost bucket list, you’ll want to save the pennies where you can. So, we have two recommendations. Firstly, you can ask friends and family if they have any puzzles in their cupboards. You will find that most people have one and they’ll happily let you borrow it, but fingers crossed all the pieces are in there. Secondly if you’re willing to spend a little, then what about checking out the charity shops and seeing what they have to offer. Many people will only do a jigsaw once and then they give it away, so you can get some decent puzzles at a smidge of the price.

Once you have your jigsaw then you may have no idea where to start, but don’t worry we have your back. Check out our ‘How to Do a Large Jigsaw Puzzle – Expert Tips and Tricks to Complete it Fast’. This will give you everything you need to know about each stage and the tips we have picked up along the way.

16. Read a Classic Novel

Reading is a great pleasure in life, and yet many of us don’t find enough time to pick up a book and enjoy it. So why not add it to your bucket list, and maybe make it a classic novel, because they’re called that for a reason. We adore female authors such as Jane Austen and the Brontës. But you could always look at more modern classics such as the Harry Potter series, or fantasy classics like the Lord of the Rings.

We’re fans of paper based, but you can always grab your Kindle and download from their vast list of options. Just find a comfortable spot and become absorbed in the world of the story. If you’ve seen a movie you love, then look online to see if it originated from a book and maybe give that a try. You’ll find the books add much more depth to the story and characters than a movie ever could.

If you don’t have the money to spend, then you can always head to a library and borrow your books for free. Or why not ask family and friends if they have any of the classics you can borrow. On Kindle there are many of the classic novels which are free or incredibly cheap.

17. Go for a Picnic

This is a great hobby for improving mental cognition, so if brain health is important to you then why not add it to the list.

19. Reconnect with an Old Friend

Reconnect with an Old FriendSocial media makes connecting with old friends so much easier, but have you actually considered meeting up with one of them? There are so many of us who have incredibly close relationships, but sadly they have drifted apart. If you have a way of contacting them why not try and see if they want to meet up. But you’ll walk away with so much joy remembering the amazing friendship you have.

There are loads of charity walks available online, all for a myriad of good causes. Most of them tend to be based on completing a set number of steps per day for a period of time such as a month. You can register online and do it yourself, or create a local one and get friends and family to join in. Some do require a small administration charge, but the rest of the money will come from the donations you collect from others who want to help your charity and see you succeed. On top of it you’ll be racking up those steps and hitting some exercise goals, so it’s a win win.

21. Create a Vision Board

We love bucket list items such as this because it helps us dream big and think about our goals for the future. If you’ve never heard of a vision board, it’s basically a way for you to manifest a life you want without limitation. As you can imagine it is something we have done and we have seen it work for a friend who not only achieved everything on their board, but so much more. All you need is a cheap cork board or poster board and then pin pictures, words, or art to it which represent the goals you want in your life. Whether it’s a dream job, vacation, a new car, owning your own home, the love of your life or an incredible life experience. Place the board in a visible spot so you can look at it every day. This will help you focus your day so that you are working towards achieving those incredible dreams.

22. Learn a Musical Instrument

Now you will be thinking that a musical instrument isn’t exactly cheap and you’re right. But you may be shocked to know that many people give away old instruments or ones which have been sat there and not used. If you check online, you may find an old guitar or keyboard that people are chucking away, but they’re still perfectly good to use. We have been given a child’s guitar and violin for free to play around with, so we can determine if we like it before buying one properly.

The next step is learning how to play your chosen instrument and again there are plenty of free options out there including YouTube tutorials. You’ll also find a group on pretty much every instrument out there, where you can ask any questions you may have, including ‘where do I begin?’.

23. Build a Snowman

Even if your little village doesn’t have much in the way of things to see and do, what about the city that’s nearby? We live in a small town just outside of Liverpool in the UK and we’ve never really done anything touristy there. So recently we visited the Beatles Story Museum and absolutely loved it. Do a little research, as you would if you were travelling to a new city and who knows what you will discover.

You can check out our guide on The Beatles Story Museum – An Exhibition in Liverpool and discover why it is a must for any fan of the Fab4.

The nerves and excitement of something you have created being enjoyed by others is a feeling like no other. If you have always wanted to write your own novel, but you have no idea where to start, our advice is look at online classes or groups. Get as many tips as you can, but the best thing to do is simply start. The best part of writing a book is that you can do it at home, whether you’re settled in bed, or curled up on your couch. Most people choose to publish themselves or upload them as an E-Reader. What matters is that you enjoy the process of writing and bringing your imagination to life in the format of words.

26. Learn a Language

You may be wondering how learning a language can be a low cost item for your bucket list, because in the past you either had to go on a course, hire a tutor or use language tapes. But what you may not know is that many of the language apps such as Duolingo are completely free. We have been learning Spanish for the last few years on Duolingo and although we pay for annual membership, some of our friends are still using it for free.

The app helps you learn a language in a game like format, so it doesn’t feel like a chore. Which language you choose will be completely personal, but it could be based on a country you regularly visit or one that you have always wanted to try. You can choose as many as you like, but we would recommend beginning with just the one for a while and then looking at the others available. Supposedly Spanish and Italian are quite similar, so we’ll probably move onto that one next.

As you use the app you can connect with friends to cheer each other on and send gifts. We’ve loved heading to a Spanish speaking country and recognising words or having a go at a few sentences and astonishing the locals. It’s a pleasurable hobby to have and it brings a new depth to your travels.

28. Create Your Own Cocktail

Most of us have a raft of alcohol bottles in our cupboards, so why not mix them up and create your very own cocktail. Practice is the key to perfecting the flavours of a cocktail and then you have the fun of drinking the results.

Then once they’ve grown you can use them to enhance the flavours in your cooking and add that nutritional boost.

This is also a great bucket list item if you have kids, because they’ll enjoy the process of planting and caring for the seeds. But they’ll be thrilled when they watch the herb plants grow. There are lots of online guides giving you tips and techniques and you can purchase seeds from most garden centres or general stores with a gardening section. We began hiking in our trainers, but we would recommend buying a pair of hiking boots as they will provide more support in your foot and ankle. Finishing a video game takes a lot of man hours and determination, but the accomplishment you’ll feel once it’s done will be incredible. The hardest part is picking which game you want to work through, so maybe do some research first as to how other players found it.

It’s also fun and relaxing spending the day picking your own fruit, and there are plenty of farms around which offer the opportunity.
