Our Bucket List Ideas When It Rains
1. Make Your Own Bucket List
It makes sense to begin with the most obvious idea and that is to start your own bucket list. It frustrates us when people think bucket lists are for people who are dying. Your bucket list is for living life to the fullest and achieving dreams and gaining inspiration in ways you never thought possible. It has been a blessing in our lives and helped us strive for more than we ever imagined. So why not use a dreary day to sit down and think of all the places you would love to travel to, hobbies or interests you’ve always wanted to try, or simple lifestyle changes you keep meaning to implement. Bucket lists don’t have to be expensive or extravagant; they can be whatever you make them.
We have a number of bucket list ideas on our site, so you’re in the right place to begin. Simply grab a pen or open an excel spreadsheet and start adding ideas to your list.
2. Enjoy a Cream Tea with Friends or Host a Tea Party at Home
There are many ways to include your friends in your bucket list, in fact we have created a Best Friend Bucket List Ideas to make it easy for you. For those of you looking for a daytime treat, then why not consider going to a cream tea with your friends. This type of event is growing in popularity, especially with the introduction of bottomless brunch. Cream teas tend to include miniature sandwiches and cakes, alongside lots and lots of tea, all served in vintage cups and on pretty dishes.
Choose a beautiful venue such as a pretty café or hotel, in the UK there are lots of stately homes and old castles who offer this option. This will make your afternoon cream tea even more special, as you’re dining in the rooms of royalty and aristocracy.
What makes this perfect for a rainy day is the fact that you’re eating inside with your favourite people. Even though a lot of the food is cold such as sandwiches, you can always warm up with a tea, coffee or even hot chocolate. Make it extra special and dress up in your fancy clothes but make sure you take plenty of pictures to remember your special day.
If you want to do something more intimate, then you could always throw a tea party at home. This one is ideal if you have children, because you can adapt it in any way you like. It could be the usual cute sandwiches and cakes on fine China, or even party nibbles. What matters most is that you spend precious time with your loved ones and enjoy this traditional and whimsical event.
3. Learn a New Language
We know you’re not going to be able to do this in one day, but if you’ve been thinking about learning a new language then why not begin on a rainy day. You’re never too old to take up new skills and learning a language is not only fun, but also great for brain health.
We are currently learning Spanish on Duolingo, mainly because we heard it was an easier one to choose. But there are other Language Apps out there, with many offering free registration. What we love about Duolingo is that we don’t actually feel like we’re learning, it simply feels like we’re playing a game. The hardest part of it all is deciding which language you are going to learn. It may be a country you regularly visit, or even plan to visit one day.
The joy of being able to interpret another language is hard to explain and we have taken great delight when we’ve been to Spanish speaking countries. It takes your travel experience to another level and shows locals how interested you are in their country. So, keep yourself warm and dry at home, and begin a new hobby which will add so much fun to your life.
4. Try a New Type of Exercise
Because it’s raining you will struggle to get out and walk or exercise, but being stuck inside can provide you with the opportunity to try something new. You can do this in a couple of ways, whether you head to a gym, community centre or another location which offers exercise classes. Alternatively, you’ll find a myriad of exercise options online on sites such as You Tube. With so much to choose from, you’ll find something to suit your fitness level. What about Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, dance cardio, HIT classes or Zumba. There’s something for everyone online, even if you’re struggling with an injury or health difficulty. The best part is that you’ll feel amazing afterwards with the exercise endorphin boost. If you choose to head to a class, then it’s the perfect way to meet new people. Even though being at home is easier, there’s something special about sharing the fun with others.
5. Start your own Blog
You may use the bad weather as an opportunity to check out new blogs which cover topics you’re interested in. This could be lifestyle choices, hobbies, food, travel or even the ever-growing mommy blogs. But have you ever considered starting your own? There’s plenty of online blogs offering tips on where to start, with lots of sites such as WordPress making it easy to set up your own website. The most important thing is to think about what you like or you’re passionate about, because this will make it so much easier to write about. Although we wouldn’t recommend focusing on it, there is an opportunity to make money from blogs. You can utilise Google Ads or display affiliate links which market products associated with your niche. Once you have started, then you’ll find there is a catharsis to getting your thoughts down in writing. But then there is the added benefit of interacting with your readers who have the same interests.
6. Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle
Rainy days are the ideal time to settle down and try something new, so what about a jigsaw puzzle. Although most people assume that jigsaws are for kids, there’s an ever-growing trend in adult options. We’re big fans of Wasgij, which is a jigsaw where you’re given the image and you have to work out what the view is. If this is a little hard, then start smaller with a 500-piece puzzle and work up to the 1,000 pieces. Jigsaws tend to be described as a relaxing hobby, but to be honest we have found them to be frustrating. Once they begin slotting into place then it’s incredibly thrilling, especially as the final one fits in. You’d probably be surprised by how many people enjoy jigsaws as a hobby, but it’s great fun on your own or with a friend. If all of that wasn’t good enough, then you also have the added health benefits such as improved memory and cognition, enhanced problem-solving skills and increased visual-spatial reasoning. Simply by enjoying a jigsaw puzzle, you have the potential to combat cognitive decline and developing diseases such as dementia. All because you’re looking for something fun to do on a rainy day, what a wonderful bonus.
If you want further tips and tricks on how to do a large jigsaw puzzle then check out our handy guide. These are a couple of our favourites, including a Wasgij and a beautiful village scene.
7. Create Your Own Cocktail or Mocktail
Cocktails or mocktails are one of those little treats when you’re on holiday or heading out for the night. There are many named after the rich and famous, such as the Bellini, Arnold Palmer and Tom Collins. We’ve even written a list of the 5 Most Expensive Cocktails in the World, which is quite a surprising read.
But what about creating your very own mocktail or cocktail and naming it after yourself, or something which is special to you. Our advice would be to start practicing with other online recipes or grab yourself a mixologist book. Then you can look at making your own and sharing it with family and friends. You may need to practice a lot, but we’re sure you won’t mind having to drink the results. Remember it’s not just the taste which matters with cocktails and mocktails, because how they look is also important.
If you enjoy this type of hobby, then you could always treat yourself and take a cocktail making class. They are available in most major restaurant brands such as All Bar One or Revolution Bar. You tend to pay a set amount, and you will be shown how to blend four cocktails by a professional mixologist. Anything you make you can then drink, so it’s not all hard work. This is a great way to start your home cocktail making hobby, because you’ll have a better idea of what base spirits and liquors to buy.
8. Take Some Time Out and Read a Book (Try a Classic)
Most people love to read, but the realities of life make it hard to find the time. So why not make a concerted effort, grab a book, sit somewhere cosy and delve into a fictional world. You could plan to do this every time it rains, so that at least you’re giving yourself the time to work through the books you have always wanted to read.
The choice of which book to read is vast, so ask friends for recommendations or why not check out the classics; they’re called that for a very good reason. It doesn’t matter where you read, or whether its paper based or on a Kindle, as long as you give yourself the time to get fully absorbed into the world of the story. We’re huge fans of the romances such as Pride and Prejudice or Wuthering Heights, but then we can also recommend Fantasy genre classics such as Lord of the Rings and the more modern Harry Potter series.
If you’ve seen a movie you love, then look online to check if it originated from a book and maybe give that a try. You’ll find the books add more depth to the story and characters, than a movie ever could.
Remember that if money is a little tight, then you could always get your books for free from a library and there are many free options to download to your Kindle. Or head to charity shops to see what second handbooks are available.
9. Have a Spa Day
If it’s raining outside then why not take the opportunity for some self-care, by either heading to a beautiful spa for the day or making your very own at home version. If you decide on the first option, then do your research before you book and why not take your partner or a friend with you. It’s a great experience to share the day with a loved one, even if you’re doing the treatments alone. Many facilities even offer access to swimming pools, Jacuzzis and saunas, so that you can make it a full day experience. Going to a spa has so many benefits for your physical and mental health, so book in that massage and facial and forget about the rotten weather outside.
For those of you who don’t have the money, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a special relaxing day of your own. You could always invite your friends around to your house and enjoy a spa day in your home. Prepare by purchasing facemasks, creams and nail treatments, then add some tasty treats and drinks. What matters most is that you relax, feel refreshed and happy as you listen to the drops of rain outside.
10. Serenade Your Friends at Karaoke
Singing is renowned for being a great stress reliver, as well as lots of fun. Access to karaoke has grown rapidly over the last couple of decades, with more and more venues opening up specific rooms for people to hire with their friends. If you’re looking for something a little easier, there are lots of at home options. You could gather your friends and family, and make a special night of it, or head to a pub if you’re confident enough to sing in public. The best part is that as you’re belting out your favourite karaoke tunes, you won’t be affected by the endless rain outside. We’ve been to a few karaoke rooms with our friends, and we can highly recommend them. In general, they’re quite cheap, have extensive playlists and you’re offered the privacy to sing as loudly and badly as you’d like.
11. Bake Something Sweet and Tasty
When the weather is awful outside it makes us want to stay in, but what can you do if you’re stuck in your home. Why not combine doing something fun, with having something sweet and tasty to enjoy. Baking is a great hobby to start, especially if you have plenty of patience and love treating friends, family and co-workers. It doesn’t need to be anything too difficult, you should maybe leave the Soufflé until you’re more confident. There are plenty of easier options though such as cupcakes, pies and cookies. Most have similar basic ingredients so it shouldn’t cost you a fortune and you can create the ideal treat to help everyone get over the rainy-day blues. If you have no idea where to begin then you can ask an experienced friend or family member to help, buy yourself a book or even better look online for free videos.
12. Enjoy Breakfast in Bed
You may be wondering, why would breakfast in bed be a bucket list item? For most of us, having breakfast is a quick thing we do in the morning before we rush to school or work. If you do have breakfast in bed it tends to be when we’re sick, which isn’t exactly enjoyable. The whole point of a bucket list is to create special memorable experiences, and this is where you may need to plan a little beforehand. If you have a day to relax then make sure it involves a morning of absolutely nothing but snoozing and eating a tasty breakfast as you snuggle under the covers. The best part of doing this on a rainy day is that you don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything, because the weather is so awful.
Our advice is to plan foods that don’t take a lot of preparation, things such as croissants, waffles, pancakes, eggs and fruits. You can even make it more indulgent by turning your morning orange juice into a mimosa. The easiest way to enjoy this kind of a breakfast in bed, is by treating yourself to a breakfast tray which doesn’t have to be expensive and can be used over and over again.
If this all sounds like hard work, then there is another option even though it is a little more expensive. You could book into a posh hotel and order a breakfast via room service.
13. Jump into Puddles
Most of these bucket list items have us avoiding the rain, but what about if we enjoyed it? We’ve all forgotten that feeling of putting on our wellies and jumping into puddles. The fun of splashing around and kicking the water at each other, as we share a small moment of childhood fun. It’s the ideal time to connect with your inner child and throw on those wellies. Grab your partner, the kids, friends or the rest of the family and get outside. Even as an adult, you’ll enjoy splashing and being playful with those you love.
14. Have a Dance Party
Great music, lots of nibbles and drinks, and your favourite party people by your side. When you have those days of rubbish weather it would make sense to stay home. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and welcome your loved ones into the party of a lifetime. As with some of the other items on this list you may need to do a little preparation, but you can always do something simpler and wing it. For those looking to make it a bucket list experience, you can buy lots of drinks and nibbles or even consider paying for catering. The bigger factors will be the playlist, so prepare something that you know everyone will love, with different genres and make sure there’s a big space for dancing. Also, consider the lighting, you can treat yourself to disco lights which will add to the atmosphere. Most importantly enjoy yourself and take plenty of pictures and video, so you can remember another bucket list moment fondly.
15. Try to Break Out of an Escape Room
As we write this, an escape room is an item on our bucket list which we have yet to do. It is basically a game where people are locked into a room and required to solve a number of puzzles in a set amount of time. If they accomplish this task, then it should lead them to a key which will unlock the room. Most rooms are themed, for example haunted houses, prison breaks or Ancient Egyptian tombs and some will have live participants. If you don’t manage to solve all the puzzles, then don’t worry you’re not locked in forever. The games master will let you out and explain the puzzles and results if you wanted to know.
There are pretty much escape rooms everywhere, not only are they a great idea for a wet day, but they’re also quite reasonable in price to play. It’s also a great option for a group of friends, so invite the brainy ones and you’ll have a better chance of winning.
16. Have an Indoor Picnic
For most of us when we think of a picnic, we will imagine being in a garden space outdoors. But why should this activity only be for the outside, why not imitate the usual picnic imagery and do it inside your home. When the weather is heaving outside you can simply make a space in your home and create the most comfortable picnic experience with cushions and blankets. This is a great idea when you have young kids who are getting bored being stuck inside. You can add a touch of authenticity by bringing any food in via the traditional wicker basket and filling it with the usual picnic foods such as sandwiches, sausage rolls and cakes. If you want to make it extra special, then add luxury items such as champagne or cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. During the picnic you can play games, talk about travels and memories past, or bucket list dreams of the future. The important thing is to take time away from the day to day, such as TV’s or mobile phones and simply be present with your loved ones.
17. Camp Inside the House
Another activity associated with the outside is camping, and although you could technically still camp in the rain, it would be miserable. What about setting up your tent inside the house and have the perfect camping experience with a few added luxuries such as a flushing toilet. You could either use an actual tent or build your own little fort using blankets and pillows. Create memories by playing games, enjoying tasty snacks and drinks, then sleeping on the floor together. It’s a memory you’ll never forget and the perfect way to shut off from the world and catch up with those you love.
18. Visit a Museum, Gallery or Historic Home
There are incredible museums, galleries and historic homes all over the world, and you probably have some close to your home. Many museums and galleries are free or reasonably priced and learning some history or appreciating culture, is the ideal way to spend a miserable wet day. We’re based in England which means we have a vast number of museums, galleries and historic homes around us. We’ve had memberships with the National Trust and English Heritage, visiting amazing places all over the country. You may need to do a little research before you head out and see what is available. Many galleries and museums have special exhibits, but they tend to come with an additional cost. You don’t have to be a history buff or art fan to enjoy a museum or gallery, simply take your time and enjoy learning something new. Most have quaint cafes to grab a bite to eat or a drink. Some of our favourites in the UK have been Chartwell House – The Home of Winston Churchill, The Beatles Story Museum, Down House Home of Charles Darwin, Highclere Castle and Stockport Air Raid Shelters.

19. Binge Watch a New TV Series or Have a Movie Marathon
Life is incredibly busy for most of us, which makes it hard to take time out and relax. Spa days are great, as is getting out with your friends, but if money is a little tight then why not take to the couch. Most of us have that TV series or blockbuster movie we have always intended on watching. We ticked off a couple recently including Pretty in Pink and the Breakfast Club, but still have Casablanca on our list. Rainy days are the perfect time to ignore the outside world and relax in the comfort of your own home. Grab some snacks and drinks, comfy pillows and blankets, then get cosy in bed or on the couch. This is a great bucket list option because not only is it free, but you can include friends and family or simply vegetate on your own. Now this is a bucket list item, so you can always take it to another level and buy matching onesies, special drinks or gourmet popcorn. The hardest decision will be what to watch, whether it’s popular series such as Friends, Modern Family and Schitt’s Creek, or something a little older but hilarious for example Golden Girls and Married… With Children. For those who prefer movies, then there are plenty of genres you can choose from whether it’s Marvel, gangster, Disney classics or even theme it such as Oscar nominated movies, foreign films or classic novel adaptations. The best part about this option is that you’ll probably forget that it’s even raining outside.
20. Begin a Gratitude Journal
When you hear the pounding of rain outside, it can feel a little depressing and make you want to stay at home and curl up on your couch or in bed. But that doesn’t mean you cannot begin a new practice which will not only tick a bucket list item but also impact your life in a positive way. As you’re curled up under the blankets, why not think about the wonderful things in your life. Focusing on gratitude is scientifically proven to enhance mental health and wellbeing. Studies have found that having a sense of positivity and gratitude can aid sleep and lower blood pressure, whilst improving your immune system. You can do this by simply taking a moment each day to think about the things you’re grateful for. Or you can start a gratitude journal, which is cheap and easy because you simply need a pad and pen. We bought one for a couple of pounds which we use as both a gratitude book and a journal. How many gratitude’s you write every day is completely down to you. We chose three because it is enough to make us think about how lucky we are, but not enough to be a chore. The best part of this is that you can grab a brew, sit, relax, and really focus on what makes you smile. What you’re grateful for is a personal thing and it will change daily. We have written down a huge variety of things, a beautiful meal, our friends, family, a cup of coffee, watching the sunset, technology, or health. It’s the perfect way to remember how beautiful life is and that there is always something to be grateful for. Amazon have a range of gratitude journals available but remember you don’t need to spend a lot on one.

21. Enjoy Some Arts and Crafts
The more we delved into the world of bucket lists, we realised how few hobbies we had. This led to us exploring different passions including various types of arts and crafts, such as drawing, painting, knitting, origami and cross stitch. It could even be something unique such as building model airplanes and woodwork. Many of us love the idea of taking up some type of craft and yet we never actually begin, so by adding it to your bucket list you can make it more of a reality. Prepare by buying in whatever you need for your arts and craft, then when the rainy weather begins you have everything to get started. You can set up a cosy space at a table or on your couch and enjoy some tasty treats as you learn your new skill or create something beautiful. There are helpful guides on the likes of YouTube for pretty much everything, and you will discover the immense joy and pride of making something yourself. If you’re not sure what you’d like to try, then we have a Hobbies Bucket List which has an extensive range of choices.
22. Get Ordained
Sometimes we love to add random things to our bucket list, especially if they’re simple to do. Have you ever felt that you had a higher purpose, or you want to be prepared to step in and officiate a wedding ceremony if needed; a bit like Joey Tribbiani in Friends. Then why not search online and get ordained, because it’s pretty simple and inexpensive. Imagine the look on peoples faces when you tell them you can legally officiate weddings and funerals, it’s such a quirky fact which will only generate more questions.
23. Try Meditating
Rainy days are ideal for trying out new techniques, which can be built into your daily self-care habits. What was a tick on your bucket list, could become an important piece of your mental and physical practices. Meditation is a great example of this, because it can help you focus your mind to achieve a mentally and emotionally calm state. It is a practice which is thousands of years old and has influenced a number of religious practices and traditions. Our experience of meditation has been positive; in fact, we have seen significant benefits since we began. By meditating for a few minutes a day, you can control anxiety, reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, and brain health. When you begin it can be a little frustrating as thoughts creep in and make it hard to concentrate. But they will calm and reduce the more you do it, and you’ll feel an inner peace which will transfer to your everyday life. Our advice is simply start and give yourself the time to focus and relax. One of the great things about meditation is that it is free and can be done anywhere, so if you’re stressed and anxious then take some time out. If you’re looking for more information and thinking of adding it to your self-care bucket list, then head to our Meditation for Beginners Guide.
24. Go Bowling
It may surprise you, but there are lots of people who have never been bowling and if that’s you then why not add it to your rainy-day bucket list. It’s a fun activity and the perfect way to escape the weather outside. Most places are inexpensive and you don’t have to be an expert to begin, simply grab your friends or family and head to your local bowling alley; there are plenty around. When you get that strike it’s such a rush of joy, but if you don’t who cares, because all that matters is you’re having fun.
25. Brew Your Own Beer
For most people, having a drink is a normal past time, so why not make it into a hobby? Beer is one of the most beloved alcoholic drinks in the world, with a variety of flavours and strengths. If you are a beer connoisseur, then why not take it to another level and brew your own at home. This is an incredibly popular hobby and although there is an initial cost, if you use the equipment a few times, it will make the resulting pints really cheap. We have tried home brew because we love craft ales and there are so many varieties to try. Whether you prefer a pale ale, love a deep amber beer or head towards the darker side with a porter or stout, there’s always something to suit everyone’s taste buds. There are plenty of online tutorials on how to get started with the barrel and other aspects of the kit. After you’ve gone through the process the first time, you’ll find each new batch will be easier because you know what you’re doing. If you find a passion for it, then you could branch out and try to make champagne or wine. For those who like the idea of trying different beers but you don’t want the extra work, head to a local brewery instead and enjoy a behind the scenes tour and hopefully a pint or two.
26. Stay Up All Night
This is an odd one, because most of us will have done this when we’ve gone out with friends, but it will have been unintentional. Why not pre-arrange an all nighter, whether you do this with your partner, family or friends. You can prepare by having a nap through the day and then planning in activities to keep yourself entertained, as the rain pours down outside. Get plenty of snacks and drinks, then make yourself cosy with blankets and pillows, before you begin a night of laughter and memory making. There’s so much you can do whether it’s watching the movies from your bucket list or a series you’ve always wanted to watch. You can spend the night chatting and talking about your dreams and aspirations. What about a pamper party with spa treatments or simply turn up the music and dance the night away (you could even theme it for example 70’s, 80s or 90s and so on). If there’s a group of you then get the board games and cards out or play something like Never Have I Ever, which we’ve written a guide on and is a perfect option for late nights and drinking. Staying up all night is a wonderful romantic experience, because you can share it getting to know each other in more ways than one; if you know what we mean.
27. Spend the Day Writing
Finding time to do something creative can be difficult in this endlessly busy world, so it’s important that we make space for it. Have you ever dreamt about writing your own novel, short story, poem or song, then why not add it to your bucket list? This is one of the easiest bucket list items because all it costs is your creativity. Whether you write it down with a pen and paper or prefer to type it up, is completely your decision. We’ve always wanted to write a novel but have no idea where to start. There are plenty of tutorials online and you can even attend classes with other aspiring authors. If an entire book seems a little overwhelming, then what about a short story or even poem. You can try something a little more unusual such as a Haiku which is a traditional form of Japanese poetry.
This is quite a personal form of art, but you can make it even more special by writing different things such as love letters to your partner, a thank you note to someone or even a letter to your future self. These types of letters will not only create a special moment in your own life, but also someone else’s (including a future you). Imagine opening a letter from your past self and seeing if you’ve achieved all your dreams and goals but also grown in ways you never thought possible.
28. Create Your Own Recipe Book and Cook Something Tasty
When the weather is bad and you’re looking for something to do that’s new, then why not head into the kitchen. Cooking is the perfect way to relax and take some time for yourself, whilst creating something tasty. It doesn’t have to be complicated and there are so many recipes online and step by step guides. Whether it’s a comforting soup, a stew, chilli, pie or even creating something from scratch such as pasta. If you’re already a fan of cooking, then why not add something special to your bucket list and spend the day creating a dish you’ve always fancied. Remember that you can always add your personal touch, for example playing around with herbs and spices. Once you’re happy with the recipe then why not write it down in your very own journal or cookbook. This means that you can make your chosen dish over and over again, but also pass it on to family and friends.
29. Learn to Play a Song on a Musical Instrument
This is one of our favourite bucket list items having added numerous musical instruments to our goals. We currently have a ukelele, guitar and saxophone, but we’re eager to add more to our repertoire. Most people would love to play a musical instrument, whether they attempted it as a teenager or merely dreamt about it. So why not prepare and buy your chosen instrument, then you’ll have it ready to begin when there’s a rainy day. Which instrument you want to play will be completely individual and of course it can affect the price of getting started. We always suggest buying cheap when it comes to your first instrument, because you have to establish if you like it and of course take the time to play. You can always look at second hand options because there are so many people selling old instruments or sometimes giving them away for free. Once you have the instrument then you’ll be wondering how to begin, well we simply Googled ‘beginners ukelele’ and lots of videos popped up on YouTube. It gave us everything we needed to learn the chords and start playing songs. You can also join social media groups which are ideal if you have any questions about your particular instrument.
During our research we discovered that the best musical instrument to start with is the ukelele. We bought this Beginners Adult Uke from Aklot which has everything we needed.
30. Create a Rainy-Day Playlist
Music is the perfect way to incite memories and emotions, so why not use it to turn a miserable wet day into something happier. If you wanted to make a playlist in the old days, you’d burn them to a CD or record to a cassette tape. But we live in an instant world which makes creating a playlist much easier. If you have access to streaming services such as Spotify or Apple Music, then why not sit somewhere comfy and create your own rain day playlist. Choose comforting tunes with an uplifting feeling, or songs which recapture wonderful memories. Reminiscing about tunes from your childhood or youth, whilst dancing your worries away is the best feeling and you’ll forget the gloomy day outside. In fact, we aim to do a little dance therapy every day to boost our endorphins. The whole point of bucket listing is to make happy new memories but also to reminisce about old ones, so this is a great idea, and you can listen to the songs over and over again. If you want to create something specific, then why not opt for rain themed songs such as Umbrella by Rhianna or Rainy Days and Mondays by the Carpenters. You’ll even find there are plenty of playlists already created with a rainy-day theme if you’re struggling to think of any songs yourself.
31. Learn Calligraphy
Sadly, this is a skill which many people don’t consider adopting, but it’s one we’d love to try. Calligraphy is basically defined as word art, due to the fact that you use the pen to make stunning lettering. What you may not know is that Calligraphy is actually an ancient art and can be seen in many historical texts and papers. The best part is that you can sit and relax at home, grab a pad and pen, then simply practice until it feels natural. Our recommendation would be to look at ordering some faux calligraphy and starting simply with a normal ballpoint pen, before moving onto anything fancy. You can write beautiful letters or invitations to your friends and family, which makes this a usable bucket list item.
32. Take a Walk or Hike in the Rain
On those wet days we tend to prefer to stay huddled on the couch at home, which is why most of the bucket list items have so far revolved around staying inside. But if the rain is quite light then we’re not opposed to wrapping up in waterproof clothes and heading outside to walk. It’s important to practice safety if you’re hiking or walking somewhere slippery, because the last thing you need is an accident. We regularly walk in the rain along a canal path near our home and there’s something peaceful about being out in the rain. If you don’t fancy getting wet, then another option is to sit somewhere covered outside and enjoy the pitter patter of the rain all around you. Grab a brew and a blanket as you take in the moment of peace outside in the fresh air.
33. Learn and Film a TikTok Dance
This is for the younger ones, or those of you who are young at heart. When the weather makes it hard to go out, but you’re eager to use up some energy then why not learn a new TikTok dance and video yourself doing it. There are plenty of dance tutorials online, or you could be ahead of the game and make up your own dance choreography to a popular song. Make sure you include your friends, family or the kids into this bucket list idea so you can enjoy the experience together. If dancing isn’t your thing, then why not make a video on whatever your chosen skill is, whether that’s singing, acting, or ticking off one of your bucket list items.
34. Colour in a Colouring Book
For many, colouring in a colouring book is seen as something done by children, but it’s actually an incredibly calming hobby. There are more and more adult colouring books available, with intricate designs created specifically for those of you aiming to let your mind wander. This is the perfect hobby for a rainy day, because it can be done anywhere and is really inexpensive. We’ve done colouring books and what struck us about this hobby is that you’re not looking at a screen, which is how most of us spend our time. There are specialised designs with inspirations from the likes of Alice in Wonderland and the Harry Potter movies, but you’ll find all sorts out there, with many specifically created to bring a feeling of zen. You could even take it a step further and design your own colouring book, which is the ideal gift for friends and family who need to destress from life. These are a few colouring books we have found on Amazon, so why not prepare by getting one and looking forward to your next rainy day. It’s a wonderful feeling to create something beautiful, whilst taking some time out to decompress from the hyper stimulation of life.
35. Learn a Magic Trick
The reality is you’re not going to become Dynamo in one day, but it’s amazing how much you can pick up in a short space of time. If you’ve always wondered how magicians do their tricks, then how about learning them yourself and wowing friends and family. There are many options to choose from including card tricks, coin tricks or more traditional magic such as a flower bouquet from your sleeve. You can either buy a beginner’s magic set, or head online for tutorials and tips on how to perfect the ultimate illusion. Then when you’ve mastered a trick or two, you can show off your talents to family and friends, impressing them with your genius.
36. Learn to Juggle
Did you know that learning to juggle can help increase focus and concentration, but also co-ordination. This is something which we are currently learning, and you’ll probably find that it will take more than one day. But if you’re stuck inside on a wet dismal day, then you may as well attempt a new skill which is fun. Whether you buy actual juggling balls (these are the ones that we bought) or use fruit, this is the perfect hobby for your hands and it’s ideal if you’re looking for something to take your mind off the stresses of life. To get started you can look for tips online, with some jugglers promising they can teach you within 10 minutes. Obviously with any skill it is all about practice, and what may originally be frustrating will soon become exciting once you can do it.
37. Try to Use Chopsticks
We love to try out random new skills, the kind of thing that would impress people if you did it. Although you may not be travelling to an Asian country, you could still learn how to use chopsticks and show off your talents at home. We used chopsticks quite a bit on our visit to Japan and we managed to work it out during our trip, so it just takes a little practice. It got to the point where we were eating chips with them, simply so we could keep trying the technique we’d discovered. Chopsticks are pretty cheap to buy and can be bought on Amazon or other online sites. Once you have them then you can practice picking up small items such as peanuts or grapes. There are lots of tips online about how to hold the sticks using your fingers. But once you’ve got it, you can show off your cultured side when you’re out eating sushi or noodles. We love themed chopsticks and have Hello Kitty and Stitch ones, but you can always buy oriental ones such as this Natural Bamboo set.
38. Have a Pyjama Day
If you read the above heading and think, why is this bucket list worthy, then maybe this one isn’t for you. But there are many of you out there who are constantly on the go and never have the chance to simply stop, put on a comfy pair of PJs and relax on the couch or in bed all day. Utilising a rainy day to tick this option from your list is perfect, because it’s indoors and you can prepare before hand and treat yourself to a new pair of Pyjamas and maybe even a fluffy blanket hoodie. To top it off you can buy in tasty, sweet treats and drinks such as hot chocolate. Then have a list of movies or TV series you’ve wanted to watch and relax or play games, enjoying this time which you’ve specifically set aside for rest. What you may find is that you’ll want to do it more often, because cutting ourselves off from the outside world on occasion can only be a good thing. The best thing is that you don’t need to spend a lot to enjoy a day in your PJs, just make sure no one interrupts.
39. Play Board Games, Video Games or Cards
Grab your friends or family and plan for a day or evening of fun with a range of games. Whether you choose board games, video games or cards, make it bucket list worthy and buy in some nibbles and drinks. If you want to take it a step further then what about buying in prizes, which don’t have to be too expensive. Some of our favourite board games are Monopoly, Cluedo and Trivial Pursuit. For gamers you have the old skool options such as Mario, or something a little more competitive like Fortnite. Card games are probably the easiest because most people have packs of cards at home, so you can choose options such as Poker or Snap. Imagine the laughs and crazy memories you’ll make with the people you love, as it pours with rain outside.
40. Start Planning Your Dream Business
This is something that many of us dream of, but never actually follow it through. It’s hard to find the time to even think about it, never mind plan and imagine what your business would look like. Rainy days are the perfect time to grab your laptop or pen and paper and begin to plan your dream business. This could be online or something more physical such as a shop. Sitting down and researching where to start and what to think about, is the perfect place to begin. You’ll find plenty of information online about the consumer demand for your business and can use AI tools such as Chat GPT to write a business plan and marketing strategy. Then consider how much investment is needed, the legality of a business and what equipment would be needed (if any). But the most important thing is to dream big and imagine what your amazing successful business would look like and offer its customers.
41. Plan Your Next Vacation or Holiday
We’ve covered this a little in the first rainy day item, which was creating your own bucket list. We view vacations or travel as a powerful method of personal growth, confidence and relief from the daily stresses of life. Why not use a day stuck inside as an opportunity to plan your dream vacation or trip. Simply grab your laptop, a brew and some nibbles and begin to think about where you want to go and the type of holiday you want. Some people like to sit by a beach and enjoy all-inclusive luxuries, whereas others love to immerse themselves in the countries culture. You may fancy a little bit of both, and this is where the likes of cruising can be a good option. There are plenty of great search sites such as SkyScanner or SeaScanner, which help you find everything you need including hotels and hire cars. This is the perfect way to spend your day, whether you actually book something or not. We love the planning stage of any trip we have taken, because it’s wonderful to discover all the amazing things you will enjoy when you get there.
42. Complete a Crossword Puzzle
This isn’t always an easy one to do, because it will completely depend on the questions in the crossword. But if you practice enough, then you will see your knowledge improve and hopefully that will lead to you finishing a puzzle. You’ll find crosswords in most newspapers, but you could buy a specific puzzle book so that you have the answers if you need them. This is a great option for improving neuroplasticity and mental cognition, so if brain health is important to you then why not add it to the list.
43. Research your Genealogy and Family Tree
There is an increasing popularity in people researching their family tree or genealogy, so why not spend the day discovering where you came from. For many the availability of online sites such as Ancestry.com made it easier to delve into the past. Discovering new elements of your history is incredibly thrilling because you can see where your ancestors lived and possibly discover any health issues. The great thing about Ancestry.com is that they have the largest genealogical data base. You can buy DNA tests which map your ethnicity to a region of the world and identify potential DNA matches. Once you have the information, you can start to pull together your family tree and share it with other members of your family.
44. Build a Lego Set
Lego was once seen as a kid’s toy, which would get everywhere and hurt like crazy if you accidentally stood on a piece. But Lego has upped their game and realised us kids from the 80s now have our own money, and they’ve introduced more complex and even artistic sets. We have seen Hogwarts from the Harry Potter franchise or the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars. But many of the newer popular Lego sets are beautiful flowers and bonsai trees. Sadly, Lego is a little pricey, but then again, it always has been. It’s a relaxing way to spend your time at home, but once completed you’ll have to decide whether you break it up again or display with pride.
45. Head to an Indoor Skating Roller Rink
When people think about skating, most people will mention ice skating. But you’d be surprised to find out that there are many roller rinks around and they are the perfect option when you’re looking to do something inside. What we love about roller skating is that it’s a wonderful combination of fun, exercise and social connection. Invite friends and family along and try to throw in some slick moves, as you enjoy the funky atmosphere around you.
46. Make a Scrapbook
Scrapbooking is a popular hobby in the arts and crafts field and is a great item for a rainy-day bucket list. Most people’s scrapbooks will hold personal items so that they can preserve them and reminisce in the future. As you can imagine, collecting items and memories is something many bucket listers will do as they tick off items on their list. So, collating them into a book will help remind you of the incredible journey and adventures that you’ve been on. How you display your memories or souvenirs is a personal choice, it could be in a book, box, or card. Within your scrapbook you could add photographs, tickets, artwork, printed media, and personal notes. Most people like to make their books elaborate and as such they decorate them in an artful way.
47. Go 24 Hours Without the Internet, Mobile Phone, Radio or Television
Sounds scary right? We get it, because for most people the thought of not having this kind of 24/7 entertainment would be tough. But it’s actually a good thing to have peace and even be a little bored. This is when your creative juices will start and you can focus on hobbies or tasks you’ve wanted to do for a while. Because it’s raining then you’ll be focused on staying at home, so why not spend time playing games with family, trying some new arts and crafts or reading that book you’ve always planned to start. The fact your attention isn’t being drawn by surrounding noise or the need to scroll, will be a revelation.
48. Study Something New
Dreary wet days are the ideal time to sit back and think about what interests you and focus on your ambitions. You’d be shocked if you knew how many online courses there are in pretty much every subject. For some there is a cost, but many are free, so why not give it a go? Whether it’s computer sciences, languages such as Spanish, photography lessons or health related studies. Imagine the joy of using up a wasted day and having learnt something new and maybe even receiving a qualification for it. The courses will vary in length and tends to be learning through videos or online workbooks. For those of you who have an endless need to learn, this is the ideal bucket list option.
49. Volunteer
Time well spent usually involves giving back to others, so rather than slob on the couch and watch another legal drama on Netflix, why not think about a little charity work. Now this could be the usual method of offering your time and resources at a location such as a care home, local food bank or delivering meals to the sick or elderly. But you would be surprised by how many volunteering opportunities are available online, which is perfect if you don’t fancy leaving the house. The key is that you feel good as you’re doing it, pass on along good will to the community and be proud of yourself at the same time.
50. Jump Around at an Indoor Trampoline Park
There are indoor trampoline parks in most areas, with popularity growing rapidly over the last few years. We’ve never been to one, although we have considered it more than once when the weather has been awful outside. They’re ideal for the younger people out there who are looking to get rid of some of that energy on a drizzly day. But that doesn’t mean that us older bucket listers can’t try a few moves. Within the trampoline park you’ll find a variety of trampolines, where you can jump around and have fun, whilst getting some exercise. If you’re really confident then why not try and perform some flips, but just be cautious and safe.
51. Treat Yourself to a Fancy Meal
The obvious thing to do on a day when the rain doesn’t seem to want to stop, is head to a restaurant. So why is this bucket list worthy you may ask? Sometimes things don’t have to be extreme to be part of your bucket list, but what makes them special is the originality. Do your research before hand and find a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try. Whether its Michelin star, or offers something quirky, it could even be your first vegan restaurant. Don’t worry if you’re spending the day alone, because solo dining is the ultimate flex and you can take in the atmosphere, read a book and order something extra luxurious simply because you can!
52. Make Ice Cream or Sorbet
We know its easier to buy ice cream or sorbet from a shop, but there’s something special about freshly made food. This is the ideal bucket list first for rainy days, so why not treat yourself to an ice cream maker. If that’s a little complicated, then we’d recommend sorbet instead because it’s a lot easier and doesn’t require a specialised machine. The best part of making your own ice cream is that you can create any flavour you like for example cherry pistachio and coffee fudge swirl. We would suggest that you Google online for advice on making the best ice cream at home or join social media groups, which there are plenty. This is a great bucket list item which will last more than the one day and you can gift great ice cream flavours to your friends and family.
53. Enjoy an Indoor Treasure Hunt
We’ve done a few treasure hunts in our time and we had an absolute blast, especially the pub crawl hunt in York, England. We know that this will take a little planning, but you’ll find plenty of guidance online and can adapt it to make your own at home treasure hunt special. Leave clues around the house and tasks for your friends or family to take part in, with each one leading you to the next. All this ends with a special prize for the winner, but we’re sure the true glory will be seeing your loved ones having fun.
54. Try an Indoor Rock-Climbing Wall
We love it when one of our items is both exciting and healthy at the same time, and indoor rock climbing is the perfect combination. This is another one which is on our bucket list, but we have yet to complete. Most facilities have tall walls with ropes, or shorter ones without ropes, and many offer beginner’s sessions with experts who will show you what to do and help improve your climbing technique. Be prepared because this is a full body work out and you may be aching the next day, but the thrill of reaching the top will make it all worth it. Who knows you may find a new regular hobby and social circle, and all because it was raining outside.
55. Enjoy a Round of Mini Golf
We love mini golf, especially some of the fun indoor ones that are available. If you’ve never played mini golf before then this is perfect for your bucket list. But if you have, then check out some of the great places near where you live, especially the fun adult only ones. Try your hardest to knock that ball in the hole with the fewest strokes possible, as you navigate ramps, obstacles and props. This is so much fun and ideal for all ages and all weathers, making it a great final option for our rainy-day bucket list.
Hopefully you’ve read through the many items on our rainy-day bucket list, and we’ve inspired you to try a few out. You’re probably quite surprised by how many things you can do when the weather is miserable and a lot of them are pretty inexpensive. Planning is the perfect way to ensure you’re prepared to go when those clouds turn grey, but we have a few last-minute options if you’re looking for exciting things to do right now. The great thing about a bucket list is it’s a reminder of the activities you want to try, so you can be intentional with how you spend and save your time and money. We love the joy that our bucket list has added to our lives, and we hope you feel the same.
